The whistleblowers are revealing the real story of the Benghazi terrorist attack and the details of the White House cover up, and the White House press corps is revolting against Jay Carney’s lame explanations for rewriting the CIA intelligence reports.
Deputy Ambassador to Libya Gregory Hicks testified Wednesday to Darrell Issa’s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Mr. Hicks is a long serving career diplomat who testified dispassionately about the events that transpired that night in Libya. His riveting testimony directly contradicted the White House version of events and has left administration officials scrambling to explain their actions in the aftermath of the Benghazi terrorist attack that took the lives of four Americans including Ambassador Chris Stevens.
ABC News reported today that the talking points derived from CIA intelligence reports explaining the events of the 9/11 Libyan terrorist attacks had been revised some twelve times. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland requested the memo be watered down to scrub references to the agency’s prior security warnings to avoid embarrassing the State Department. Mr. Hicks testified that he “was stunned” and “embarrassed” when he heard Ambassador Susan Rice wrongly blame the terrorist attacks on an anti-Islamic Internet video.
Mr. Hicks testified that Cheryl Mills, Chief of Staff for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, ordered him to disrupt a congressional investigative visit by Congressman Jason Chaffetz. According to Mr. Hicks, Mills ordered that no embassy personnel were to be left alone with Congressman Chaffetz and that a State Department lawyer was to be present at all times.
White House spokesman Jay Carney met with a select group of the White House press corps today in a closed-door off-the-record session to discuss recent revelations about the Benghazi investigation. The regular White House press briefing was delayed several hours as Carney got his story straight. When the regular briefing finally occurred, press corps members hammered Carney mercilessly about the inconsistencies between his original story and the new revelations coming from Greg Hicks and other whistleblowers. Carney appeared flustered and struggled to offer coherent answers to members of the press irate at having been lied to previously in press briefings. Carney’s performance hurt White House credibility and makes it appear to be hiding something.
Benghazi is finally coming back to bite the White House as the whistleblowers step forward and destroy the administration’s credibility. Americans were lied to by administration officials to protect the president’s reelection prospects. With Obama, it’s politics all the time, and he treated the Benghazi terrorist attack as another political event to be managed. Military assets were prevented from responding to perpetuate the narrative that this was a spontaneous attack arising from protests over an obscure anti-Islamic video. Military response would have indicated that the administration believed the attack was a planned terrorist attack requiring military assets to respond.
Administration officials are pushing the line that no military assets were close enough to respond in a timely manner, but this is not true. The embassy attack lasted seven hours with the first deaths occurring about 3 hours into the attack and the other two deaths occurring near the end of the attacks. F-16s from Aviano, Italy could have been on station in 3 hours, and it was already known that the Libyans were afraid of US air power. Additionally, no administration officials attempted to contact NATO allies such as Greece who had F-16s less than an hour away.
The entire Benghazi narrative patched together by an administration in campaign mode and managing world events as political talking points is rapidly disintegrating as those on the ground are finally allowed to step forward and present their version of events. The testimony by these first whistleblowers is already encouraging others to step forward with additional details that will continue to poke holes in the administration’s contrived version of events.
The White House press corps and the liberal media have shielded the Obama Administration through many episodes with the understanding that they were getting a fairly close version of events. However, this time they realize they have been played for fools and outright lied to by the administration they have always been willing to help. Neither they nor Americans are happy at being lied to in such a blatant manner. Americans are rightly shocked at the testimony coming from Gregory Hicks as he pulls back the curtain to reveal the truth behind the administration’s manufactured version of events. The press corps reminded Jay Carney and the administration why it is risky to toy with their affections.
The biggest blunder of the Benghazi episode by the administration may be its callous treatment of the press which has so effectively shielded it from controversy in the past. There is certainly plenty of material to investigate by journalists incensed at their treatment as media stooges. Fast & Furious contains a wealth of investigative information for an ambitious journalist. In fact there are so many investigative opportunities available that it might be hard to know where to start.
