In threatening the Supreme Court over their pending decision on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), President Obama is once again showing himself to be a spoiled brat not getting his way and threatening to do something terrible.
It has been well documented that Barack Obama is thin-skinned and easily angered when the least amount of resistance to his agenda appears or he doesn’t get his way. This character trait appeared very soon after he took office, and he has worked hard to hide it after the initial ridicule he received from his political opponents. Try as he might, he has had difficulty suppressing this character flaw and its appearance has become a signal as to his lack of confidence in the success of particular issues. President Obama became especially prickly after the stupendous losses suffered by the Democrat Party in the 2010 midterm elections where Republicans regained control of the House and improved their minority position in the Senate.
Part of the reason for the development of this particular character flaw has been the fact that Barack Obama has glided through life on a path cleared and smoothed by his socialist enablers and handlers and has never had to experience resistance or fight for anything. The Ayers family secured his acceptance to Harvard, paid his way through college, and Bill Ayers even ghost-wrote his books to give him a plausible and sympathetic cover story. One sure method to cause President Obama to lose his cool is to question the authenticity of his birth certificate or Selective Service registration documents. He always shoots from the hip defensively when addressing questions concerning the plausibility of his life story.
After two years and much spilled ink, the much-derided and hated Obamacare has finally arrived before the Supreme Court for consideration as to the constitutionality of its various sections. An extremely rare three days of oral arguments were scheduled to cover various portions of the act, and Solicitor General Donald Verrilli defended the indefensible as well as anyone ever could. It quickly became apparent to Court watchers that Obamacare was in trouble, and General Verrilli was immediately identified by the progressive left as the scapegoat to be thrown under the bus should the law be struck down. The progressive left has a long history of eating its own in times of trouble and its members never seem to realize this fact until they’re already under the bus and on their way out the door.
The Supreme Court conducted their initial vote on the Friday after oral arguments, and the speculation began as to the outcome of this initial vote which is supposed to remain secret until the Court releases its opinions in June. Administration officials continue to express confidence in the constitutionality of the law as is to be expected. For his part, President Obama warned the Court not to engage in “judicial activism” by overturning Obamacare. Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, called it a “fantasy” to think “every law you like is constitutional and every Supreme Court decision you don’t is ‘activist.’” Other prominent Democrats are walking back parts of Obamacare in preparation for what they see as its defeat by the Supreme Court. Former Democrat Party Chairman Howard Dean stated recently that the individual mandate “is not really necessary” to the federal health care overhaul.
Once again, careless remarks by President Obama have created a media firestorm as federal judges have taken exception to the heated rhetoric and veiled threats aimed at “unelected judges.” This latest attack on the Supreme Court follows Obama’s snide comments during his 2010 State of the Union address where he scolded the Court on its Citizens United decision in which they found a ban on campaign spending by corporations unconstitutional. Justice Samuel Alito took exception to President Obama’s mischaracterization of the Court’s decision by mouthing the words “not true” in response to Obama’s comments. This episode was unnecessary and showed an incredible intolerance by Obama for political dissent from another branch of government over which he has little to no control. President Obama was attempting to bully the Supreme Court then, and he’s attempting to do so again over Obamacare by resorting to the tactics of street protest he learned as a community organizer following the Saul Alinsky playbook.
These thuggish tactics might work on the local level with Chicago politicians, but they are quite ineffective against the Justices of the Supreme Court whose very structure was initiated to insure their immunity from such unrestrained public passions. The Supreme Court is and rightfully should be concerned with the constitutionality of laws passed by congress and totally unconcerned with the desires of the masses. President Obama claims a background teaching Constitutional Law and should be aware of this unless he was faking this aspect of his background like so many already believe. When pressed on any issue, the community organizer comes out in President Obama and he resorts to the thuggish tactics of street protest to gin up manufactured support or opposition as called for by the situation. The spectacle of Obamacare supporters bussed in by the Democrats in a lame attempt to sway the Supreme Court away from its constitutional duty was pathetic street protest at its worst and seen for the sham it was by Americans who overwhelmingly reject Obamacare and look forward to its demise at the hands of the Court. Cheap theatrics and bullying have no effect on the Supreme Court and are more likely to backfire as the Justices see themselves under attack by a president clearly operating outside of constitutional limits.
Administration officials and prominent Democrats are attempting to spin defeat of Obamacare in the Supreme Court as a defeat for Republicans in the laughable scenario that voters will blame Republicans for the healthcare mess. Americans have made a distinction between healthcare and health insurance in this debate. We have the best healthcare in the world, but our insurance markets have been distorted and broken through government intervention in the form of Medicare and Medicaid whose artificially low reimbursement rates force up the cost for those with private insurance. Government regulations that force private insurance to cover conditions outside the mainstream, such as mental health and drug addiction, drive up insurance costs and prevent consumers from choosing policies that best fit their needs. The progressive liberals are attempting to define healthcare as a right to be provided free by the government while it is really a service to be consumed as needed and paid for individually as obtained. All the threatening and bullying in the world is not going to change this fact, and its not going to affect the Justices of the Supreme Court.
