The Rise of the State

The natural order of citizens subservient to the state which is subservient to God is being upended by progressive liberals seeking to place the state above God.

God had plenty to say on the establishment and execution of government. In I Samuel, the people of Israel demanded that Samuel appoint a king to rule over them because Samuel’s sons had abused their authority over them. In all fairness, Samuel’s sons had become corrupt and the people were unhappy with their rule, but they also wanted a king to go before them and fight their battles. In other words, they wanted the government to take care of them, and they placed their trust in an earthly government instead of the Heavenly Father. In His wisdom, God told Samuel that the people were rejecting not Samuel, but Him as their King. He also told Samuel to warn the people what this new form of government would become.

As God instructed, Samuel told the people “This is what the king who will reign over you will do: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. Your menservants and maidservants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.”

God’s warning to the people about what the government would become is truly chilling given the power of the federal government over our lives today. Taxes at the local, state, and federal level consume well over fifty percent of our incomes. The state aligns vast resources against those with whom it comes into conflict. Our sons and daughters are consumed in wars continued far past their original intent. The progressive liberals insist that the state is the only sovereign authority over the people and take every opportunity to deny God’s authority over the state, or even His existence. In adherence to the Humanist Manifesto II, they continue to insist “…No deity will save us; we must save ourselves.”

In the case of Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization v. Winn last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the “right” of taxpayer standing in establishment clause cases does not exist. In her scathing dissent, Justice Elena Kagan insisted that taxpayers should always have access to the judiciary whether they are injured personally or not in cases of government support for religion. The fundamental question in this case turns on whether frivolous lawsuits can be brought against religious-based schools by taxpayers when no actual injury has occurred. Kagan’s dissent is aligned precisely along the progressive liberal notion that the state has absolute power to do as it pleases, when it pleases, and for whom it pleases. Progressive liberals don’t even bother to hide their support of the state as all-powerful anymore.

In the recent decision of the Obama Administration to insist that health insurance plans cover contraception despite the objections of religious authorities, the progressive liberals are exercising their insistence that the state stands above all other spheres of life including the church. In the last century, we’ve seen the federal government consume the spheres of labor, education, community, and family. Who can forget Hillary Clinton’s book “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child?” This was a classic example of replacing community with the state and interfering with the most basic unit of social order, the family. Assaults on traditional marriage in the form of homosexual unions, relaxed divorce laws, and redefinitions of the term marriage itself are constantly played out before us on the nightly news as if the move away from marriage is inevitable.

America’s Founding Fathers recognized the natural order of God as sovereign conferring legitimacy upon a government established according to His principles to govern His people. They enshrined this knowledge in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, but the progressive liberals have hijacked these venerable documents in the creation of an all-powerful state they arrogantly wish to rule above even God Himself. The people refused to heed Samuel’s warning and rejected God’s plan for government to great catastrophe. America was founded upon a belief in God and held true to His teachings to achieve prosperity and power. The progressive liberals shun God and ridicule His teachings as outdated in a foolish attempt to elevate themselves as gods. They have led America down the path to ruin followed by so many other great empires and civilizations who thought they knew better than God.

In his book How Should We Then Live?, Francis Schaffer reiterated the five attributes that marked the decline of the Roman Empire as first described by Edward Gibbon in his seminal work The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (originally published in the late 1700’s). See if you can recognize any of these at work in America today. First, there was a mounting love of show and luxury. How many advertisements declare that we deserve this or that, or seek to sell us something that confers status upon us? Second, there was a widening gap between the very rich and the very poor. As our government becomes ever more oppressive, billionaires like Warren Buffet and George Soros add to their wealth while ordinary Americans struggle to make ends meet with rising food and fuel prices. Third, there was an obsession with sex, including homosexuality. Witness the rise of pornography and its mainstream acceptance along with ever more vulgar displays of homosexuality that is increasingly accepted by institutions such as our military. Fourth, there was freakishness in the arts, masquerading as originality, and enthusiasms pretending to be creativity. Today’s “artists” use ever more vulgarity and profanity in their works as “critics” praise them for their boldness and originality. Fifth, there was an increased desire to live off the state. The Obama Administration came into power promising to redistribute wealth and has encouraged and supported the Occupy Wall Street movement whose participants denigrate the wealth of others achieved through hard work as they demand it for themselves.

In the Bible, we read where God punished rulers for abusing their authority over the people or elevating themselves above His sovereignty. God punished King Ahab and Jezebel for wickedly abusing their power to kill Naboth and steal his vineyard. God punished King Nebuchadnezzar with insanity for daring to assume he was more powerful then the Lord. These are powerful examples that God is truly sovereign and in control of the universe despite what the world would have us believe. America’s leaders should heed these warnings and return to obeying God and seeking His counsel before it is too late to soothe His anger at our having turned away from Him. God turned His back on Israel several times in the Bible when they strayed from His Word, and He will surely do the same to America. Does anyone not see that our leaders abuse their power to steal from us all that they desire? Or, that they profess the supreme power of the state over all aspects of our lives and dare to place the state above the authority of God?

In writing this article, I have borrowed liberally from Focus on the Family’s Truth Project. This powerful series has influenced me profoundly in articulating in an orderly fashion the big picture of exactly how and why the progressive liberals are orchestrating their denial of God’s existence to reign supremely over us. In the 1828 edition of Webster’s, politics is defined as “The science of government; that part of ethics which consists in the regulation and government of a nation or state, for the preservation of its safety, peace, and prosperity; comprehending the defense of its existence and rights against foreign control or conquest…and the protection of its citizens in their rights, with the preservation and improvement of their morals.” Politics was once understood to be a part of ethics and concerned with moral improvement, but its abuse by those seeking to live off the hard work of others as officials of the state has sullied its reputation and denigrated its profession to one of the lowest in society. It is time for us Americans to reapply Biblical standards to those applying for political office to insure that we are ruled by just men humbly seeking the counsel of God Almighty and aware of the magnitude of their charge. Else, we will continue to watch the progressive liberal clique increase the power of the state over us as they strangle the last vestiges of liberty our forefathers struggled to obtain and preserve.

One Response to The Rise of the State

  1. GothicArc says:

I have begun to wonder if the Beast of Revelation is indeed, government. Remember Revelation states that she “sits on seven hills”. Some think this is the Catholic church; I think it is referring to the most powerful government in the World at that time: Rome.Undoubtedly it is referring to the world system: it’s values, means, and purposes, and the opposition of this system to the Living God, the Creator. We do have one thing in common with Rome: it’s all people and they have not changed.
